The cut of my jib

Somebody came in the store today and said to me, "I like the cut of your jib." What the heck does that mean? thought I. I posted the question on facebook and Fr. Justin replied thusly:

"Cut of your jib: One's general appearance and demeanour.

The jib of a sailing ship is a triangular sail set between the foretopmast head and the jib boom. Some ships had more than one jib sail. Each country had its own style of sail and so the nationality of a sailing ship, and a sailor's consequent opinion of it, could be determined from the jib.

The phrase became used in an idiomatic way during the 19th century."

Well, if that didn't make my pride swell. Somebody likes the cut of my jib. :) But then I imagined myself strung up between the foretopmast head and the jib boom. :p

  1. Hey, Elias.

You do have a good jib kid, but you can't rely on that to attract people to you. As a matter of fact, you need to get over this whole 'needy' thing, ok? We all need people in our lives, but you have the wrong idea. You can't sit here and wait for somebody to save you, because when it comes down to it, you're gonna have to decide to save yourself. God will help you with this, but it's your own will that is gonna let this happen, ok? Right now your will is all fucked up.

Now, don't take that the wrong way. You do have the will for the will, as in... you want to want what's right, but you're still far FAR away from it. So keep reading that book by St. Theophan and trust in God. The evil one has had a firm grip on your heart for 38 1/2 out of 39 years of your life, and you ain't gonna be a saint overnight. Remember patience, it's one of the things Fr. Justin tried to teach you before you left. I know, it's hard, but just take it one day at a time... eventually the good days will outweigh the bad ones. And it's all a learning process.

Just try not to sin too much.

    Your friendly neighborhood,
